A major trade union forum was held in Rome to mark the 76th anniversary of the Italian Labour Union (UIL)—one of Italy’s three largest national trade union confederations. Maksim Pazniakou took part in the event on behalf of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions (BKDP).

UIL represents more than 2 million workers and, together with CGIL and CISL, forms Italy’s “big three” union confederations engaged in social dialogue and collective bargaining with government and employers. UIL General Secretary Pierpaolo Bombardieri noted that today’s geopolitical shocks are directly affecting the world of work—labour organisation, production systems, supply chains, and the protection of workers’ rights. He emphasised the importance of international cooperation, European integration, multilateralism, and adherence to international law as essential tools for overcoming crises.
The forum also highlighted UIL’s position on Belarus: the Italian trade union movement strongly condemns the Lukashenka regime’s violations of human rights and trade union rights and expressed solidarity with Belarusian trade unionists who have been imprisoned or forced into exile.

In comments to gazetaby.com, Maksim Pazniakou stressed that in the current geopolitical reality fewer and fewer states remain committed to international law, while force increasingly replaces dialogue. That is precisely why such forums matter, he said: for trade unions it is vital that the system of international law is preserved and strengthened, and that human rights and workers’ rights are not pushed to the margins.
Pazniakou noted that support for Belarus’s independent trade unions from major European union confederations such as UIL is an important signal of international labour solidarity and shared responsibility for peace, human dignity, and the defence of workers’ rights.
