The Organizing Committee of the Belarusian Human Rights Community’s Prize for the protection and promotion of human rights has published its list of nominees for the 2024 awards. One of the nominees listed under the category “Human Rights Solidarity 2024” is the Belarusian independent union activist Volha Brytsikava who is currently in jail.
Earlier, Volha Brytsikava was the Head of the Belarusian Independent Union’s (BNP) workplace organization at the Naftan oil reifinery. The case against her dates back to March 2024. Then, the Vitsebsk Regional Court found her guilty under Article 130 of the Criminal Code (fomenting discord) and sentenced her to three years in prison. However, in August 2024 there was already a second trial; this time Volha was charged under Part 3 Art. 361 of the CC (calls for actions threatening national security) and Part 1 Art. 361-4 of the CC (aiding and abetting extremist activities).
Her case was tried in camera. The court added another three years on top of her earlier sentence. Ultimately, Volha Brytsikava has been sentenced to six years behind bars.
Traditionally, the prize awarding ceremony will take place on December 10, the International Human Rights Day.
On December 20, 2024, the Supreme Court will examine her appeal. The decision will be taken by a college of judges chaired by Judge Vladzimir Davydau.
