On October 31, political prisoner and member of the Free Trade Union of Belarus Volha Barushka will celebrate her thirty-seventh birthday in prison.
Volha Barushka, an anesthesiologist and resuscitation assistant at the Minsk Scientific and Practical Center for Surgery, Transplantation and Hematology, was arrested at home on August 22, 2022 and taken to Minsk Remand Prison No. 1.
The law enforcers recorded a "penance video" with her, which was published on pro-government Telegram channels.
Volha's case was heard by Maskouski District Court in Minsk. The doctor was accused of insulting a representative of the authorities and insulting a judge.
Judge Alena Murashka sentenced the doctor to two years in the colony of the general regime. She is currently serving her sentence in Penal Colony No. 4 in Homel.
On March 17, 2023, the appeal was considered, but the sentence was upheld, and the appeal was dismissed. A month later, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Belarus put the political prisoner on the "list of extremists".
Representatives of the Belarusian human rights community recognized Volha as a political prisoner. Ingrid Fiskaa, Vice-President of the Norwegian Parliament and member of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and Defense, became Volha's symbolic "godmother."
