Children's transplant doctor sentenced to 2.5 years in prison

On 16 February Vitsebsk Regional Court sentenced medical officer Aliaksei Aliakseichyk to a real term in prison, human rights activists report. He was found guilty under Art. 361 part 3 of the Criminal Code ("Calls for sanctions and other actions, aimed at causing harm to the national security of the Republic of Belarus").

The trial was held behind closed doors. Judge Evgeniy Burunov sentenced Aliakseichyk to 2 years and 6 months in a general regime penal colony.


It is known that Aleksei Aliakseichyk worked as a transplant doctor at the Republican Scientific and Practical Centre of Children's Oncology and Haematology for more than 20 years.


He is considered to be one of the best specialists of the centre, having performed many bone marrow transplants.

Alexei is a member of the Free Trade Union of Belarus (SPB), part of the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions, which was liquidated by the authorities last year.
