Independent trade union activist released after serving 30 days in prison

Public and trade union activist of the Belarusian Independent Trade Union (BNP) Valiantsina Bolbat was released from the Vitebsk temporary detention facility, where she carried out her arrest of 30 days, «Vitsebskaya Viasna» reports.

We remind that on 29 April Verkhnedvinsk police drew up several reports against the activist under Article 19.11 of the Administrative Code (distribution, production, storage, transportation of information products containing calls for extremist activity or propaganda of such activity) and Part 3 of Article 24.23 of the Administrative Code (violation of the order of organisation or holding of mass events).


Then Verkhnedvinsk court sentenced her to 30 days of arrest, the police immediately took her into custody in the courtroom. But the woman had a hypertensive crisis and was taken to hospital, where she was treated for a fortnight.


Valiantsina appealed against the court decision in Vitsebsk Regional Court. On 22 May Judge of the regional court Sviatlana Ivanova cancelled the decision of Verkhnedvinskiy district court.

But the case of the public activist did not end there. Valiantsina's case was transferred to Navapolatsk court, and on 19 June she was sentenced again in the building of Polatsk court. Judge Zinaida Balabalova, notorious for her trials against trade union and public activists, passed a judgement, according to which she sentenced her to 30 days of arrest.


Valiantsina Bolbat appealed this decision, but to no avail, and now she has to serve the 30 days. The activist from Verkhnedvinsk was tried six times this year under Article 19.11 of the Code of Administrative Offences and Article 24.23 of the Code of Administrative Offences.
